Last week, I watched as my friends in Kenya went to the ballot box, then waited anxiously for the results. I watched as the vote broke largely along tribal lines, as it always has. And in the fray, some of the brightest candidates – candidates who refused to play tribal politics – were unable to garner enough votes to triumph.
It was a difficult day at the grocery store. Candy’s normally well-behaved little girl was being anything but. Not only was little Ella being grumpy and demanding. She was thrashing around, screaming, and acting up in ways Candy had never seen before.
For about an hour, I had a very nice, very expensive aluminum paperweight.
In life, some days are very productive, and everything just clicks. Other days, your 4 year old knocks your latte over, spilling it all over your almost brand new MacBook Pro. Today was the latter.
Even people who know nothing about Africa still know that it’s a veritable treasure trove of pictures. It’s a continent full of exotic plants, exotic animals, and even exotic people. Racist assumptions come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they show up in subtle ways, and sometimes they show up wearing a white hood. Most often, they are couched in attitudes and platitudes that let the racists off the hook, while attempting to validate the bigotry bubbling beneath the surface.
What is life like in Kenya? Well, yesterday, I filled two pitchers with water in just over an hour. Mind you, I didn’t have to walk for miles to get the water like so many people here, but from the time I decided to fill the pitchers to the time they were filled, the big hand on the clock made a full revolution. Here’s my version of the events (and there’s no one here to refute me).
